Frequently Asked Questions About Passports

Frequently Asked Questions About Passports

Q: I lost my passport. What should I do?

A: In case of loss or theft of your passport, you must report it to the local police station. In Greece, jurisdiction depends on the location of the incident, and you may be referred to a police station that handles foreign nationals.

Upon reporting the loss or theft, the police station will issue a report or certificate in your name confirming the incident.

Once you obtain this document, contact the Consular Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Athens via email at embassy.athens.consular@mfa.rs or by phone at +30 210/747-23-60 to apply for a new passport, if you are a resident of Greece. The legal deadline for processing passport applications submitted abroad is 60 days.

If you are temporarily in Greece or urgently need to travel to Serbia, the Consular Section in Athens or the General Consulate in Thessaloniki may issue a travel document (putni list) valid only for returning to Serbia via the shortest and fastest route. It cannot be used for further travel.

The original police report or certificate must be presented when applying for a new passport or travel document.

Q: Can one parent apply for a passport for a minor?

A: Both parents must submit the application for a minor’s passport. If one parent cannot be present, a notarized written statement of consent is required.

A single parent may apply only if they have sole custody, in which case appropriate documentation must be provided.

Q: My passport has expired and I don’t have time to wait for a new one. I need to travel urgently to Serbia. What should I do? A: If you must travel urgently to Serbia and your passport is expired or damaged, the diplomatic-consular mission can issue a travel document (putni list) valid only for returning to Serbia. Once in Serbia, you can apply for a new passport.

Q: We recently had a child. How can we get a passport for our baby?

A: If you are citizens of the Republic of Serbia, you must first register the birth of your child at the diplomatic-consular mission in the country where the child was born. After the child is entered into the birth registry in Serbia, you may apply for a passport.

Q: I emigrated from the former Yugoslavia and have lived abroad for decades. Can I get a Serbian passport, and how?

A: Any citizen of the Republic of Serbia may obtain a passport, provided there are no legal obstacles. If you are certain you hold Serbian citizenship, you may apply at the nearest diplomatic-consular mission in your country of residence. If you are unsure of your citizenship status, contact the mission for assistance in verifying it. More information about applying for a passport is available [here].
